Early Life and Career
Josef Nicolai Newgarden was born on December 22, 1990, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. He began his racing career at a young age, competing in karting at the age of 13. Newgarden quickly rose through the ranks, winning several championships before moving on to formula racing.
IndyCar Success
In 2012, Newgarden made his IndyCar debut with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. He joined Team Penske in 2017 and has since become one of the most successful drivers in the series.
Newgarden won his first IndyCar championship in 2017, becoming the first American to win the title since Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2012. He won his second championship in 2019 and is currently the winningest current American driver in the series.
Indianapolis 500 Victory
In 2019, Newgarden won the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500. He became the first driver since Takuma Sato in 2017 to win both the IndyCar championship and the Indy 500 in the same year.
